Intuition: that feeling you get from deep within that knows exactly what to do next. This is a feeling that we all have but are taught not to trust. Our society teaches us to look to others for the answer and to do things that make us uncomfortable because it is the polite thing to do. By the time most of us reach adulthood, intuition is just a whisper of some mystical and out of touch thing that is not as reliable as data, the internet, or other’s opinions. But what if we could strengthen our intuition, hone in on it, and listen to that voice within us that is often screaming at us to stop, to move forward, or to go in a different direction?
Another term for intuition is called interoception. Interoception is a sense in the body that allows us to be aware of our emotional or physical state. For example, interoception is noticing that you are too full after eating, or that you are tired and it is time to go to sleep. The key to honing in on and strengthening intuition lies in getting in touch with the messages your body is sending you every minute of the day, then listening to them! We may know we are thirsty but not feel like getting up for a drink of water. We may know that scrolling on social media is making us more anxious but decide not to stop. The key to making changes is awareness. By simply hearing the messages your body is sending, then CHOOSING to listen to them, you are strengthening your intuition. The more you learn to trust your body and its messages, the more messages you will hear. The messages may start out as simply going to the bathroom when you need to instead of putting it off, but soon they will turn into avoiding foods that make you feel sick or give you low energy, then it will move on to spending more time with a certain person because they make you feel relaxed and avoiding time with others who cause you stress or unease. When you are finally able to feel the subtle nuances between a relaxed nervous system, excited nervous system, and stressed system, you may figure out the things in your life that give you purpose and joy. You may choose a career that brings fulfillment, a partner that helps you heal and a lifestyle that causes ease, increased quality of life and joy.
The main purpose of a chiropractic adjustment is to connect your brain and body by removing interference in your nervous system through the spinal column. The more connected you are to your body, the better your interoception and the more you are able to trust your intuition!
To begin honing your intuition, connect to your body through meditation, movement, chiropractic adjustments, awareness, and by simply trusting yourself.
