Although we often refer to the mind and body as if they are independent entities, they are actually inseparable. Our mind and body are closely interconnected and mutually influencing one another regardless of whether we are aware of their interactions.
For instance when we think negative thoughts, our body starts to become tense and hunch forward, our fists may tighten, and our teeth can start to clench. If we think positive thoughts, our body will relax, we may stand up straighter and we may be more open to change.
Although they may differ considerably, most meditation practices aim to calm the mind by focusing on what is happening in the present moment. By better connecting to our mind and body we become more aware of what is going on internally. We can actually become aware of our unconscious thought patterns and change them to something more beneficial. Instead of being at the mercy of our thoughts and emotions we can come to understand them, and with this understanding comes positive change. Positive change brings positive thinking, which is a critical requirement for physical and emotional healing.
