The chemical revolution started in the 1950s after the Second World War. We started making stronger and more potent products that could perform “miracles.” Our food lasted longer, it no longer stuck to our pans, our wrinkles went away, etc. Although our incoveniences have decreased, unfortunately so has our health. Autism, autoimmune diseases, allergies, ADHD, and cancer rates are all rising. They may not be directly linked to the barrage of chemical concoctions we put on our skin, in our bodies, and around our houses, but they definitely correlate.
In my letters about health, I tend to stress the
reduction of ingesting chemicals/processed foods.
Our body has to spend a lot of energy cleaning out added and foreign chemicals contained in the food we ingest. Many of these chemicals have no studies to show the long term effects, because new chemical concoctions are being made every day. When it comes to
ingesting food, try to eat as natural, as pesticide free, and as unprocessed as possible to help your body thrive.
This is also true of the things we put on our skin. Our skin absorbs everything it comes into contact with. This is why people use nicotine and various other patches to absorb medicine into their body. Therefore, you want to make sure you would be ok with eating anything that goes on your skin. Go into your bathroom and look at the labels of your lotions, shampoos, soaps, hair products, perfumes etc. What would happen to you if they were ingested orally?
Focus on being as natural as possible. Use coconut oil as a natural lotion, use vinegar and baking soda to clean your bathtub, and use tea tree oil as a disinfectant. If you are just getting started you can find non-toxic/less toxic personal products and cleaning products at any natural grocery store like Sprouts, Whole Foods, or Central Market. Good luck and remember that health is a life-long process. Make changes at whatever speed is sustainable.
