The vitamins, minerals and other nutrients we get from foods are the building blocks of our cells. Our cells are the building blocks of our body. They make everything in our body function. If you have unhealthy cells, you have an unhealthy body. So with that said, it is important to realize that the quality of food you put into your body makes up the quality of your body. You are what you eat! Our body is so intelligent that it can turn a twinkie into an eyeball cell, but what is the quality of that eyeball cell compared to one that was made from the nutrients of an apple? It is kind of like building a house out of straw compared to building a house out of bricks. Do you want your body to be susceptible to the slightest outside force or do you want it to be strong and healthy? One way to make a strong and healthy body is to give it the proper building blocks.
This all makes perfect sense when you really think about it, but there are so many food products out there that it may be hard to realize what is healthy and what is unhealthy. I am here to give you some very simple, very easy guidelines. The first thing you need to ask yourself is what type of food is natural and from the earth like the food our ancestors ate. Our ancestors were hunter gatherers. They ate fresh organic fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and organic meats. They didn’t eat anything that was processed and full of chemicals that we cannot even pronounce. They did not drink the milk of another animal. In the mammalian kingdom, only babies drink milk so that they can quickly gain weight and triple in size in their first year or 2 of life. Also, many allergies and digestive problems can be attributed to milk products. They did not eat bread or bread products because bread is a processed food. Our ancestors did not eat grains (like wheat) because they would expend more energy picking the grain than they would get from eating it. Additionally, our body has a hard time processing bread products; you usually feel very tired after you eat a large pasta meal or a lot of bread, because your body is expending a lot of energy processing it.
So when you are trying to figure out how to eat well, keep it simple; if it doesn’t grow in the ground and it doesn’t have a mamma, don’t eat it! The more natural, organic and less processed the food is, the better. I am not telling you to give up everything you have ever loved in the world and turn into a raw food only vegan. In fact, taking things away from your diet is counterproductive because it will only make you crave them more. Just start to add healthy things to your diet. I like to add “fresh fiber first.” Eat a fresh uncooked fruit or vegetable before every meal. This will insure that you do something very good for your body and it will help you eat less of what you normally eat. The more healthy food you add to your diet, the more you will crave it and the better your body will feel. Changing over to a healthy lifestyle should be an easy and rewarding process, if it is too hard, it only means you’re trying too hard. So relax, become aware of what is good for you and enjoy the small victories you make!
